The best investment you can make is in yourself. Who you are encompasses everything you do. The refinement of your character should be the top priority to actualize your potential. There are many positive characteristics, but some are more powerful than others. Like a main cog that starts the system, developing these core traits will empower you into a superior version of yourself. With the right soil, water, and light these traits can be cultivated. If you’re seeking a harvest of abundance, these are the seeds you need to sow.

  1. DISCIPLINE

” We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret or disappointment.” – Jim Rohn

You can have the greatest strategy on the planet but if you don’t have the discipline to work the plan then it’s all in vain. Discipline is the ability of doing what needs to be done when it needs to be done. It’s executing your 5 a.m running routine, even when your body is making the excuses that your sore and it’s too cold and dark. There’s a reason discipline is listed as number 1. It’s a foundation that supports all the others. The ability of having your entire being under your full subjection. All successful people have high levels of discipline, unsuccessful people do not. Procrastination and other vices are symptomatic of the absence of Discipline. When this trait is off duty bad habits arise to rob you of your potential. Just developing discipline in itself can revolutionize your life.

  1. COMMITMENT

“The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.” –Vince Lombardi

Commitment is integrity to word. It’s finishing what you started, seeing something through. It’s staying faithful to your vision, especially when it’s inconvenient to do so. There comes a point in pursuing goals where our pain threshold is surpassed and we feel like letting go. The will to hold down is dependent on one’s level of commitment. In the weight room it’s the last rep your body is saying you can’t do it. In building muscle that last rep is the most important. Isn’t it the same in life? The muscle of commitment can be built. We can start small like cleaning the house, completing a course, or a project at work. Whatever we decide to do in life we need to fully commit to have success. It’s the mastering of this trait where life really rewards us. Many are consumed with regret by not remaining committed to their dreams, don’t be one of them.

  1. PERSEVERANCE

Great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance.” Samuel Johnson

Imagine you’re a heavy-handed boxer that knocks out all your opponents in the 1st round. You’re then faced with boxer who survives to the 2nd and knocks you down for the first time. How do you respond? How we respond to getting knocked down says more about us than anything we do when we’re standing up. You might have momentum and everything is going your way, but inevitably life will come and punch you against the ropes. Perseverance is the survival trait. It’s the capacity to overcome the adversity and continue fighting towards victory. To endure the punches, roll with them, and learn from them. Without perseverance the waves of the world will drown us. Choose to have the tenacity to persevere even when you feel you have no fight left in you. The will to go on is what separates the contenders from the champions.

  1. TEACHABILITY

“If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you.” – Zig Ziglar

We are all finite beings incapable of grasping the fullness of existence. The human body has two ears and one mouth, which implies we should be listening twice as much as we speak. It’s only the ego that can deceive us into thinking we know all we need to know. This is why humility and teachability are the same. Every professor was once a student, and the greatest professors will admit that they still are. We are called to be students of life and our teachers can come from anywhere. A 5 year child can directly or indirectly teach an adult a distinction to a breakthrough. It doesn’t matter how old we get, if we want to be successful, we need to remain teachable for continual learning. Accurate information can save us years in trial and error. The teachable person recognizes that the right kind of knowledge can surprise them from anywhere. Teachability will download the strongest version of yourself faster than anything else.

  1. COMPASSION

“The greatness of a man is measured by the way he treats the little man. Compassion for the weak is a sign of greatness.” – Myles Munroe

Some may be thinking what does compassion have to do with my personal success? Everything. Yes, we all have our own unique story, but there are over 7 billion human stories running simultaneously with ours. Reflect on any good narrative you’ve ever read, there are always more than one character. The people in your life are the greatest blessings towards your success. Even if you perceive some as negative, they are still adding depth to your character. Compassion is the capacity to shift the focus off of self, and shine it on others. This trait affords an opportunity to have a deeper bond with the living things around you which will energize you when you’re running low. The wolf draws strength from its pack, and we as humans draw strength from each other. Compassion unifies all living things together. Through compassion comes understanding and forgiveness, which I believe is freedom. Serve your way to success.

  1. VISION

“Have a vision. It is the ability to see the invisible. If you can see the invisible, you can achieve the impossible.” – Shiv Khera

Vision is arguably the most valuable of the human physical senses. It gives us direction in the world around us. Mental vision is even more important. It’s the ability to harness the vastness of one’s imagination and bring an ideal into existence. You’re unlikely to loose an arrow at bulls-eye if you can’t even see the target. The trait of vision aims one’s life’s trajectory towards a desired destination. Without vision in life we are lost and disoriented. Vision is vital in leadership and it breeds innovation. It allows one to make connections between important details that others are missing. With clarity of vision we can effectively navigate through the trials of life and help others do the same. Use your vision to see your destination and travel towards it.

  1. FAITH

“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Faith is organic to the human being, and not just referring in a spiritual sense as belief in a Creator. To have confidence is essential in everyday part of life. Faith is the fire that keeps your vision alive. When we get into our cars we need to have the faith that we’ll drive to our destination safely. Ultimate success is not possible until we first believe in ourselves. Faith is not an excuse to deceive yourself, faith is best founded on truth. Utilizing the other Transformative Traits, and getting the work you need to get done provides the necessary reference points to form faith. Faith is the last trait listed because it binds it all together. As you take the actions you need to do, activate faith and trust the process. Preparation and execution are the material to build belief. Believing is what bridges the gap between your reality and your destiny.

START YOUR TRANSFORMATION

Place your focus on acquiring these traits by taking practical action steps to water the seeds. If you want to build discipline for example: document a specific regiment to follow and adhere to that routine for a week, and bask in the feeling of accomplishment when you do. Imagine following that regiment to your benefit for a month, then imagine a year. Imagine how you would feel to see discipline blossoming in your life and live from that place. Comment below on the area you most need to improve, an action step, and the feeling you’d have with that trait working in your life. Identifying these 7 Transformative Traits brings clarity, but the real power is in assimilating these principles every single day.

  2. Hey! I really liked your post, it was really interesting and definitely worth the read. I love quotes so it was great how you started with one for each trait, very inspirational. Also, with each trait, you connect it to something so relatable, like how you need discipline to wake up early or be committed to finish your set at the gym… the things I truly lack. Your post makes me really think about myself and how I need to find the motivation to make some meaningful changes in my life. I definitely need to start from the top with discipline since I tend to procrastinate all the time and push things to a later time. Reading this was much needed, great job!
